Nine Mile publishes great writing, with a special focus on Central New York.
 We publish twice a year, in the Spring and in the Fall.
 Our name comes from Nine Mile Creek, a 25-mile long waterway formed 14,000 years ago by glaciers in our region.  Like our namesake creek, Nine Mile is varied and surprising,
 with different writings coming together to form a cohesive whole.


We also produce the Talk About Poetry Podcasts on

iTunes & at Soundcloud, where working poets engage

in a freewheeling discussion of poems

that interest us.  The link is  on the menu above

For poetry submit 4 – 6 poems in word or text formats, no PDF. Please look at our format before you submit.  We include artist’s bio, picture, and aesthetic statements to help the reader seeing your work for the first time.  We do not accept essays, reviews, video / motion based art, or Q&A’s at this time.

Andrea Scarpino

Editor/Founder of Nine Mile is Bob Herz, an MFA graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, author of two books of poetry, former editor of Seneca Review and the Hobart & William Smith College Press, and various business and general publications. He worked for some years for the State Legislature, where he authored the Arts & Cultural Affairs Law, the NYS Poet and Fiction awards, the Elderlaw, and many others. He is a business consultant.  He is married and lives in LaFayette, NY.

Andrea Scarpino, author of the poetry collections Once Upon Wing Lake (Four Chambers Press, 2017), What the Willow Said as it Fell (Red Hen Press, 2016) and Once, Then (Red Hen Press, 2014). She received a PhD in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University, and an MFA from The Ohio State University. She has published in numerous journals, and she served as Poet Laureate of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula 2015-2017. Her upcoming edited anthology is Undocumented: Great Lakes Poets Laureate on Social Justice (Michigan State University Press; March 1, 2019).

Editor emeritus is Whitney Daniels, a BFA graduate of Syracuse University with a degree in Communications Design and owner of WRKDesigns, a full service surface pattern and graphic design studio in Syracuse, NY. She is a member of the Junior League of Syracuse, Near Westside Initiative Business Association, Syracuse First, and Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority. Her designs and handmade products have been featured in The Post-Standard, Syracuse Woman Magazine, Syracuse New Times, and Salt City Magazine. Her eco-friendly handmade products (jewelry, accessories, and home decor items), are available on her Etsy Shop as well as various craft fairs throughout the year. Ms. Daniels is responsible for the look and feel of the magazine, and its blog.

Co-editor/publisher is Stephen Kuusisto, author of the memoirs Have Dog Will Travel, Planet of the Blind (a New York Times “Notable Book of the Year”) and Eavesdropping: A Memoir of Blindness and Listening and of the poetry collections Only Bread, Only Light, and Letters to Borges. A graduate of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a Fulbright Scholar, he has taught at the University of Iowa, Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and Ohio State University. He currently teaches at Syracuse University where he holds a University Professorship and is Director of Interdisciplinary Programs and Outreach at the Burton Blatt Institute. He is a frequent speaker on disability and diversity issues around the US and abroad.
